Does the the Advertising I see influence the food choices I make?

Before I started this topic I would have said yes but now not so much. I think the biggest food influence for me is in takeaways. I do want to try one of those KFC double chicken burgers with no buns the way people are talking about them they sound really good. When i was little i was always asking mum if we could go to McDonalds everytime we passed one of those golden arches in the car because i liked to collect all the new toys in the happy meals. But now i don't care about the toy and so i don't go to McDonalds as much because the burger just doesn't taste that good and there is not much in it like the pictures show. Now i am a Subway fan because I have choice in what i put into my roll and they do look so healthy.

My mum makes this for us in summer and i love it!

1 avocado
1/2 can drained beetroot diced
2 tomatoes diced
1/2 cup of lemon juice
1/2 cup mayonaise
salt & pepper

  1. Put the couscous into a large bowl and carefully pour over boiling water. Set aside to stand for 10 minutes, then fluff the couscous with a fork.
  2. Add the spring onion, parsley, mint, avocado, tomatoes, beetroot, salt & pepper and toss gently to mix.

Advertising is all around us. We see it on the TV as we watch our favourite programmes, it is often found in our letterboxes, we hear it on the radio, see it at the bus stop on our way to school and are surrounded by it at the mall.

Did you know that there is a huge amount of planning that goes into making an ad? It is the advertisers job to get YOU hooked into buying and spending your money. If they do a great job they can make lots of money for the companies or people who have a product to sell.

I have discovered that there are many ways or ‘strategies’ advertisers use to get us to buy their products. One way is to make you think you really need something, play to a person’s emotions like one of those new Kentucky fried chicken no bun burgers or it makes you cool. Other ways advertisers get hold of our attention is by humour, like that funny ‘Eyebrow’ dance thing for the Cadbury’s ad or by having a celebrity sell something. This makes you think if they think it is good it must be. Sometimes shops say buy one get a second one half price. So they trick you into buying more than you wanted to. Another trick when advertising to us kids is to use a reward like a toy with a Mac Ds happy meal, or in a Kinda surprise or get collectable cards like the "All Blacks ones in the Sanitarium weetbix packs.

So next time you see, read or hear something being advertised take a minute to stop and think do I really need this or am I being tricked into buying this because of it’s attractive packaging or persuasive words? Is it really value for money or would a different brand be better?
